French expressions with FAIRE

FAIRE is a very often used verb. We use it to talk about:

  • weather –> il fait beau, il fait chaud (the weather is nice, it’s warm)
  • size –> je fais du 38 (I’m size 38)
  • height –> je fais 1,70m (I’m 1,70 high)
  • price –> ça fait 10 € (that will be 10 €)
  • temperature –> il fait 20 degrés (it’s 20 degrees)
  • sports –> il fait du tennis (he plays tennis)
  • household –> faire la vaisselle, faire la lessive, faire le ménage, … (to do the dishes, do the washing, do the housework/clean the house)
  • etc


We also use FAIRE in some idiomatic expressions as shown in the infographic below.

faire des courses = to run errands, do some grocery shopping 

faire la cuisine / faire à manger = to cook 

faire la vaisselle = to do the dishes 

faire le ménage = to do the housework, do the cleaning 

faire le (son) lit = to make your bed 

faire la lessive = do the washing, wash clothes 

faire sa valise = to pack (your bags) 

faire des économies = to save (money) 

faire du bruit = to be noisy, make a lot of noise
