Common mistakes #5 ⚠️

Regarder - with or without preposition?

English

The verb REGARDER is used WITHOUT preposition, because it’s both a DIRECT TRANSITIVE and INTRANSITIVE verb.

But what is a TRANSITIVE verb?
It’s a verb that is followed by an OBJECT.

It can be DIRECT transitive, that means followed by a DIRECT object (NO preposition).

  • Il regarde la télé.

Or it can be INDIRECT transitive, that means followed by an INDIRECT object (WITH preposition).

  • Il parle de son voyage.

And what is an INTRANSITIVE verb?
It’s a verb WITHOUT object.

  • Nous parlons.

Some verbs are both transitive AND intransitive, like REGARDER and PARLER.
