Happy Birthday ! 🎈

Bon anniversaire !

Today is my birthday, so I’m writing a post about….. birthdays !

As odd as it may sound, in French, we use the verb AVOIR to talk about age. We say:

  • J’ai 7 ans.
  • Ils ont 7 ans et demi.
  • Il a 2 mois.
  • Elle a 1 jour.
  • Il a 3 semaines.
  • Nous avons le même âge.
  • Hier, j’ai eu 30 ans.
  • Demain, je vais avoir 30 ans.

To ask how old someone is, you can say:

  • Tu as quel âge ? (informal)
  • Quel âge avez-vous ? (formal)

To ask for someone’s birthday, you can say:

  • C’est quand ton anniversaire ?
  • Tu es né(e) quand ?

When you don’t know the exact age of someone, you can say:

  • Elle a dans la trentaine.
  • Elle a une trentaine d’années.

To wish a happy birthday, you can say:

  • Bon anniversaire !
  • Joyeux anniversaire !

You can sometimes hear “balais”, which actually means “broom”, but it’s the slang word for “ans”:

  • Il a 30 balais.

If you don’t remember how to conjugate the verb AVOIR, have a look here.

Bon anniversaire à toutes celles et ceux dont c’est l’anniversaire aujourd’hui ! 🎂
