La lettre H peut se trouver au début ou à l’intérieur d’un mot :
The letter H can be found at the beginning or inside a word:
On distingue 2 sortes de H, le H ASPIRÉ et le H MUET.
There are two kinds of H, the ASPIRATED H and the MUTE H.
En général, le H est aspiré pour les mots d’origine germanique (parfois arabe, espagnole ou japonaise) et muet pour les mots d’origine latine.
In general, the H is aspirated for words of Germanic origin (sometimes Arabic, Spanish or Japanese) and mute for words of Latin origin.
Il y a donc plus de mots qui commencent par un H muet que par un H aspiré.
There are therefore more words that begin with a mute H than with an aspirated H.
Avec le H aspiré, on ne fait ni l’élision ni la liaison.
With the aspirated H, there is no elision or liaison.
* la haine / les haines = hatred
* le handicap / les handicaps = disability
* le harcèlement / les harcèlements = harassment, bullying
* le haricot / les haricots = bean
* le hasard / les hasards = chance, luck, coincidence
* la hauteur / les hauteurs = height
* le héros / les héros = hero
* la honte / les hontes = shame
Lorsqu’un mot commence par un H muet, on fait l’élision et la liaison avec le mot précédent :
When a word begins with a mute H, the word is elided and linked to the preceding word:
* l’habit / les‿habits = item of clothing
* l’habitude / les‿habitudes = habit
* l’herbe / les‿herbes = grass, weed
* l’heure / les‿heures = hour
* l’histoire / les‿histoires = story, history
* l’homme / les‿hommes = man
* l’hôpital / les‿hôpitaux = hospital
* l’hôtel / les‿hôtels = hotel

There is actually no difference in pronunciation between mute and aspirated H 🙂 You only hear the difference in plural and when the elision is needed. I understand this can be confusing !🤯😅

J’imagine que vous voulez parler du mot “halo”. Oui, c’est un mot qui commence par un H aspiré. Une petite astuce pour savoir si un mot commence par un H muet ou aspiré est de le chercher dans un dictionnaire français (par exemple http://www.larousse.fr). Si un astérisque * précède le mot, c’est que le H est aspiré.
