Faut-il dire merci DE ou merci POUR ??
Should you say MERCI DE or MERCI POUR?
Lorsque MERCI est suivi d’un NOM, vous avez le choix entre DE (D’) et POUR :
When MERCI is followed by a NOUN, you have the choice between DE (D’) and POUR:
- Merci de ta visite. = Thank you for your visit.
- Merci pour ta visite. = Thank you for your visit.
Lorsque MERCI est suivi d’un VERBE à l’INFINITIF, vous devez TOUJOURS utiliser DE (D’) :
When MERCI is followed by a VERB in the INFINITIVE, you must ALWAYS use DE (D’):
- Merci de faire attention. = Thank you for being careful.
- Merci d’être venu. = Thank you for coming.
- Merci de ne pas fumer. = Thank you for not smoking.
Souvent les 2 prépositions sont possibles devant un NOM, mais on note que POUR est plus souvent utilisé avec un nom CONCRET :
Often both prepositions are possible in front of a NOUN, but we note that POUR is more often used with a CONCRETE noun:
- Merci pour le cadeau. = Thank you for the gift.
alors que DE est plus souvent utilisé avec un nom ABSTRAIT :
whereas DE is more often used with an ABSTRACT noun:
- Merci de votre attention ! 😉 = Thank you for your attention 😉
