To love - to like
To love or to like?
Le verbe “aimer” est un peu spécial. Il peut vouloir dire “to love” quand on l’utilise avec une personne, mais “to like” quand on l’utilise avec une chose.
The verb “aimer” is a bit special. It can mean both “to love” when used with people and “to like” with things.
- J’aime Thomas. = I love Thomas.
- J’aime le chocolat. = I like chocolate.
Avec adverbe
Quand on utilise un adverbe comme par exemple “bien” ou “beaucoup” avec le verbe “aimer” en parlant d’une personne, le verbe ne veut plus dire “to love” mais “to like“.
When using an adverb like “bien” or “beaucoup” after the verb “aimer” talking about a person, its meaning changes from “to love” to “to like“.
- J’aime Thomas. = I love Thomas.
- J’aime bien Thomas. = I like Thomas.
- J’aime beaucoup Thomas. = I like Thomas a lot.
Adorer
Pour dire “I love chocolate”, on peut dire “j’adore le chocolat”.
To say “I love chocolate”, you can say “j’adore le chocolat”.
